Kilbourne Plat History


Sandusky is the only city in the world originally laid out on Masonic symbols.

Hector Kilbourne, the first Master of Science Lodge No. 50, Sandusky in 1818, was the surveyor who made the original plan of the city. He proceeded with well-defined ideas and painstaking care in making the original survey as well as giving names to the streets in honor of the statesmen, warriors and others prominent in the early history of the country.

Established in 1818, the central business or waterfront district has one of the most beautiful collections of historic architecture in the Midwest. Many buildings can be found on the National Register of Historic Places.Schade Mylander Plaza, Sandusky, Ohio

Stroll along the downtown waterfront, or visit one of our many antiques and collectible stores, unique gift store, galleries, or dine at one of our local restaurant. Find almost any service you might need!


Sandusky is also well known for its beautiful century old downtown parks, both along the shoreline and Washington Street. It holds the designation of an Ohio "Tree City," and has won numerous competitions for its floral displays. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon or evening in one of our wonderful gazebos; or take a break in one of the park picnic areas.


The Waterfront District also boasts several attractions and museums. The Historic State Theatre, Maritime Museum, Merry-Go-Round Museum, Follett House Museum, Eleutheros Cooke House, and Sandusky Library are all well worth a visit.


Fish off the Jackson Street Pier, have lunch overlooking the bay at beautiful Shoreline Park. Relax at Schade/Mylander Plaza. Marvel at the working floral clock in Washington Park, or visit the "Boy with the Boot" statue.


With over three million visitors to the City of Sandusky each year, this historic waterfront is a beautiful, charming, and enchanting place to visit
